Mildenhall U-13's 3 - 0 Cherry Hinton

Mildenhall Under-13's began their league campaign with a 3-0 win over Cherry Hinton...

The Under-13’s kicked their league campaign off with a convincing 3-0 victory over Cherry Hinton Lions.

The boys kicked off the game in nervy fashion as Cherry Hinton created a handful of chances which could have easily put them in the lead with Mildenhall having minimal possession and struggling to get a foot in the game. Mildenhall were the first to score though with the Hall striker putting the ball in the back of the net, but was disallowed by the linesman. This gave the team some confidence that they could score again. Despite the run of play, Mildenhall took the lead through a well weighted ball by one of Mildenhall’s exciting central midfielders into the feet of the forward who got in front of his defender to take a touch in front of goal and slot the ball into the corner of the goal.

After this, Mildenhall settled down and began to play some attractive football with the central midfielders linking up well to create opportunities in the final third where the wide players helped stretch the pitch and make it difficult for Cherry Hinton. Mildenhall continued to try and dominate possession and with success but still the game was relatively close and Cherry Hinton showed their physical side to win the ball back regularly in the midfield third. The referee blew his whistle for half time and Mildenhall came in the better team, while leading 1-0.

At half time, the players took on drinks and began to discuss the positives and negatives of what they did well with the ball and without the ball. The main emphasis was to be more aggressive to win the ball back and ensuring they created the right angles to dominate the ball through the thirds.

In the second half, Mildenhall were straight back on it and it was clear Mildenhall had taken those points on board and instantly were more dominating of the ball. When the centres backs got on the ball, midfielders were dropping into receive and wide players creating the appropriate angles for The Hall to dominate and move the ball forward effectively. It quickly became 2-0 as Mildenhall’s left back showed some stunning footwork to beat multiple players, get his head up and play the ball into the forward, who ran 1v1 with the goalkeeper to slot the ball in the bottom right hand corner to double Mildenhall’s lead. The most important moment of the game was when Mildenhall gave away a penalty shortly after the second goal which the Mildenhall keeper stood up to make a fantastic, cat-like save before making another follow up save with Cherry Hinton keen to get on the rebound!

The second goal led to a further number of attacks for Mildenhall who looked like they could add a number of goals to their lead but added the final goal with around 15 minutes to go. After this, the focus was on continuing the controlling performance and look to manage the game through patient possession.

The full time score was 3-0 to Mildenhall Town who start their season in great fashion!

Alfie Tate, Manager of the Saturday Under-13’s said this after the game: “I thought the boys showed a lot of resilience today. Most of the group are under-12’s, so to be playing up an age group against these tough, physical lads shows their resilience. Also, to be on the back foot for most of the first half and struggle to get a foot in the game, I thought that showed it as well.
We played some good football, but not until we went 1-0 up. Once we scored, the game settled and our principles of play began to show. We made the pitch bigger, we relaxed on the ball and it simply made us more efficient going forward. Credit to Cherry Hinton, they made it difficult for us.
It's a great start for us and no doubt it'll help the boys settle the nerves now that we've started with a positive result. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season, there's going to be ups and downs but no doubt, it's going to be exciting!”
